Alfa-Romeo is one of the top Italian car manufacturing companies, which was established in 1910. Since the year 1986 Alfa-Romeo has been a division of the famous Fiat Group and was formerly called ALFA or Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automibili.
Societa Anonima Italiana Darracq was the name of the company that evolved as Alfa-Romeo. Cavaliere Ugo Stella established this company in 1906 jointly with Alexandre Darracq’s French car firm.

Stella was a famous aristocrat of Milan. This firm originally manufactured Darracq cars at Naples but after the termination of their partnership a number of Italian investors along with Stella shifted production into an inoperative Darracq factory in Portello’s neighborhood of Milan.
The name of this company was changed to A.L.F.A and the first car manufactured by this company, that was not Darracq, was the famous 24 HP of 1910 by designer Giuseppe Merosi. Merosi continued designing a chain of modern ALFA cars with stronger engines. ALFA also involved itself in motor racing. Drivers Ronzoni and Franchini competed with 24 HP models at the Targa Folio in 1911. But the production of cars at ALFA was stopped for three years with the beginning of the First World War.
Since its launching Alfa-Romeo has involvements with car racing. Alfa-Romeo was the winner at majority of the most popular and important races as well as other events associated with motoring like Mille Miglia, Le Mans and Targa Folio. It sustained to enjoy success at Fast Touring, Prototypes, Formula 1 and Touring. Independent drivers also had competed at a number of rallies with Alfa-Romeo cars and had been successful. Alfa-Romeo has entered into competition as a supplier of engine and a constructor through private entries, and work entries and Autodelta Alfa Corse. At present it is competing in a number of car series of Touring and the modern Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is expected to participate to the class of Le Mans GT2.
Alfa-Romeo became popular during the 1960s for its models that were designed specifically for Carabinieri and Panthers – the Italian police and also for its undersized cars. Prior to its take over by Fiat, it had a bold commercial policy as it continuously experimented with novel solutions and incorporated them into its production despite the risk of the loss of market share.
