Bugatti

Carloanshub » Cars » Car Manufacturers » Bugatti
Bugatti was established in France as one of the high performance car manufacturers by Ettore Bugatti. The Bugatti company became a legend for making some of the most exclusive as well as some of the fastest cars in the world.

The automobile company Bugatti was founded in Molsheim a town in the Alsace region of France. The company was known for its detailed car engineering and artistic execution of car designs.
Bugatti also enjoyed great success in early Grand Prix motor racing, winning the first ever Monaco Grand Prix and 24 hours of Le Mans twice.

Only a few pieces of each of Ettore Bugatti's vehicles were produced, the most famous being the "Royale", Type 35 Grand Prix cars, Type 55 sports car and the Type 57 "Atlantic".

In the production run of some 7,900 cars (of which about 2,000 are estimated to exist today), each Bugatti model was designated with the prefix T for Type, which referred to the chassis and drive train.

Ettore Bugatti's son, Jean Bugatti, died in August 1939 while testing a Type 57 tank-bodied race car near the Molsheim factory. Thereafter, the company's fortunes began to decline. World War II ruined the Molsheim factory and the company lost control.

Efforts were made in 1950s and 1960s to revive automobile production, but these came to naught.

Bugatti continued with airplane parts production until it was sold to Hispano-Suiza in 1963. Snecma took over in 1968. In 1977, the two merged to form Messier-Bugatti.

In 1987, Italian entrepreneur bought the Bugatti name and established Bugatti Automobili SpA. In 1993, Bugatti presented the prototype of a large sedan called the EB 112 but by the time Bugatti EB110 came to the market, the North American and European economies were in recession. Production stopped in September 1995.

In 1998, Volkswagen AG bought the rights to produce cars under the Bugatti brand.

In 1999, Bugatti EB 16.4 Veyron emerged as the first incarnation of what would be a production road car.

In 2000, Volkswagen AG incepted the Bugatti Automobiles SAS and introduced the EB 16/4 Veyron concept. In July 2005 Bugatti Automobiles SAS announced that the car would officially be called the Bugatti Veyron 16.4. and would be delivered to clients in October 2005. The first cars were delivered in early 2006. A new model is expected in 2010.
