Datsun is basically a car manufacturing brand which was used by Nissan Motor Co. Ltd and DAT Motors. This name came into existence when DAT Motorcar Co. named one of its car models as ‘Datson’. Later, in the year 1933 when Nissan Motor Co. Ltd overtook DAT motorcar the name was changed from ‘Datson’ to ‘Datsun’. In 1986 the Datsun brand got discontinued completely. Today, it is remembered for its sports cars, especially the Fairlady roadsters and Fairlady coupes.

Almost every year a new brand of Datsun was launched. Some of Datsun’s prime models were Datsun 1200, Datsun 280ZX Turbo, Datsun Bluebird SSS R411, Datsun 260Z, Datsun 240Z and Datsun Fairlady. Datsun had an immense presence in the American market and was possessed by numerous car lovers. From used cars to brand new cars, Datsun cars were always a craze.
Before the Datsun name came into existence, DAT (a famous automobile) was built in the year 1914. The manufacturer was Kwaishinsha Motorcar Works. When DAT came up with a smaller version of the car the usage of the word ‘Datson’ happened for the first time, meaning ‘Son of DAT’. People in Japan thought that re-branding of the name was necessary in order to popularize the name Nissan. Along with names like Honda and Toyota, which captured the U.S. market, the necessity of marketing the brand name Nissan also became significant.
At last in the year 1986 the campaign’s tag line changed from ‘Datsun, We Are Driven!’ to ‘The Name is Nissan’. After a long gap the name Datsun was once again brought up in media by Nissan, by naming their latest model D22 as Datsun. Production of this model happened in large scale, between May 2001 and October 2002.
The brand name ‘Datsun’ was used for the sports car as well. Datsun Sports, also referred to as only Fairlady, were basically a wide collection of roadsters which were manufactured by Nissan. These cars were majorly famous for being the alternatives for expensive sports cars manufactured by European MG and Triumph sports cars. Handful of models that were popular is SPL212, SP310/ SPL310, S211, SPL213, SP311/ SPL311 and SR311/ SRL311.
Finance companies were open to provide car loans to the possible buyers of Datsun. Even some of the banking sectors had tie-up with the brand for offering car loans to the potential buyers.
