Peugeot is a leading brand of French cars and also a division of PSA Peugeot Citroen. Peugeot is the second biggest European car manufacturer after Volkswagen. Its origin dates back to the 19th century when bicycles were manufactured at the company. The headquarters of this French brand of car is based at Avenue de la Grande Armee in Paris and are located nearby the famous Concorde Lafayette Hotel and Porte Maillot.
Peugeot factory was in its production business since the beginning of the 18th century. But it entered the industry of wheeled cars through the crinoline dresses, which had steel rods. It then started producing frames for umbrella and wire wheels. In 1882 the penny farthing “Le Grand Bi” as well as a variety of other types of bicycles of Peugeot was introduced by Armand Peugeot. Bicycles of Peugeot went on to be manufactured for the next few years whereas in 1926 the bike company and the car company separated from each other.

After Armand Peugeot held a meeting with Gottlieb Daimler, Peugeot started taking interest in cars. In 1890 the first car of Peugeot was manufactured, which had three wheels along with a steam engine.

Peugeot prefers its names on its models as variations of x0y and x00y. x actually indicates the car size whereas the model number is represented by y. Peugeot 406s are thus newer and bigger than the Peugeot 305s. But this system of names also has exception.

Peugeot is also the manufacturer of salt and pepper grinders, power tools and knives. It is also the producer of bicycles, which it began manufacturing in Beaulieu in 1882. In 1889 cars and motorcycles were also started to be produced by Peugeot. North American rights of the name of Peugeot bicycle were sold to the Canadian ProCycle by Peugeot in the concluding years of the 1980s. Its European rights were sold to Cycleurope SA. However, it still continues to be a leading producer of mopeds and scooters in the European continent.

Peugeot had its involvement in motor sport almost since its beginning and introduced five cars in 1894 for the popular Paris-Rouen Trials. One of these cars, which Lemaitre drove, finished second. These trails are normally considered to be the earliest competition in motor sport. Peugeot also participated in different types of events till the First World War. But it contributed the most, in 1912, to the history of motor sport with the win of its car at the Dieppe French Grand Prix, which. Georges Boillot drove.
