Pontiac is one of the top international brands of car. General Motors manufactures Pontiac, which is marketed in Mexico, Canada and the United States. It is a mid-level brand of car that offers a more enhanced and gaudier driving experience against an extremely affordable price. Its advertisements are targeted particularly at the young audiences.
General Motors launched the brand Pontiac in 1926 as a ‘companion’ brand to the line of Oakland Motor Car of General Motors. Pontiac Spring & Wagon Works used the name Pontiac in 1906 for the first time and associated it with Chief Pontiac, the leader of a rebellion held just after the post war period of the historic French and Indian War. Pontiac Spring & Wagon Works and Oakland Motor Car entered into a merger on 1908 November and commenced operations as Oakland Motor Car Company. Their operations were also combined in the city of Pontiac at Michigan for manufacturing the Cartercar.

In 1909 General Motors bought Oakland Motor Car Company and the concept of the oldest Pontiac from General Motors was of an inexpensive six-cylinder car. It was actually meant for competition with the cheaper four-cylinder models. The sale of Pontiac exceeded that of Oakland within a very short time period and sales of Oakland reduced with the increase of the sales of Pontiac. It started marketing cars with the regular engines of six cylinders.

The logo of Pontiac was a typical Native American Headdress till 1956. This logo was modernized to the present logo of a red arrowhead - a Native American element for 1957. Other than the logo of ‘Indian head’, the ‘Silver Streaks’ – the narrow steel strips, are the typical features of Pontiac. Both of these features were stopped to be incorporated while making cars in 1957. The ‘grilled-over’ and the design of the split grille are other popular styling elements of Pontiac. ‘Grilled-over’ was started to be used in the Pontiac cars with the Grand Prix in 1963.

In the popular Rolex Sports Car Series the race cars of Pontiac GXP.R are run by Banner Racing, Stevenson Motorsports and Autohaus Motorsports. Pontiac GTO.R is run by Matt Connolly Motorsports. Pontiac has even a strong presence in popular culture. Pontiac GTO is widely known as “The Great One” and also the “Goat”. Pontiac is a common sight in other types of events and television soaps like “I Dream of Jeannie”, “My Three Sons” and “Family Affair”.
