Rolls Royce

Carloanshub » Cars » Car Manufacturers » Rolls Royce
Rolls Royce or Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is one of the subsidiary companies of the Bavarian Motor Works or BMW. Since 1997 it has been manufacturing the Rolls-Royce cars. Vickers, the owners of Rolls Royce, resolved to put up Rolls-Royce Motors for sale in 1998. Roll-Royce Motors was founded after the merger of Rolls-Royce Limited whereas production of Rolls-Royce cars ceased in 1973. Rolls-Royce Limited had been made a national company in 1971 because of the economic fall of the business due to the enhancement of the jet engine RB211.
BMW was the potential buyer of this car brand as it had already delivered engines and other motor parts for the cars of Bentley and Rolls-Royce. But Volkswagen beat BMW with 430 million British pounds. The aero-engine manufacturer, Rolls-Royce plc was determined to license out specific important trademarks to BMW and not to Volkswagen. Rolls-Royce plc had already entered into merged businesses with BMW.

Volkswagen had the rights of the hood decoration, the “Spirit of Ecstasy” as well as the form of radiator grille. But it didn’t have the rights to the name Rolls-Royce, which was essential for manufacturing cars. BMW did not have the rights to the mascot and the grille. So it licensed the logo “RR” and the name for 40 million British pounds.

Volkswagen and Bavarian Motor Works resolved that between 1998 and 2002 the engines would be supplied by BMW. It would also let the names to be used and this usage would stop on the 1st of January in 2003. From this same date onwards BMW would have the right for using the name “Rolls-Royce” for the cars and the old Bentley/Rolls-Royce division would get the right to manufacture cars with the name “Bentley”. In 2002 the production of the Corniche, the convertible of Rolls-Royce, was stopped.

The 2003 Phantom was introduced in 2003 January at the North American International Auto Show of Detroit. This was the first model produced by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited – one of the subsidiary companies of Bavarian Motor Works. It has actually no association with the real Rolls-Royce company except for the trademarks. The Phantom Drophead Coupe of 2007 is another new model manufactured by Rolls-Royce.

In September 2006 Rolls-Royce made an announcement of developing a latest 4-door model with the help of BMW 7 Series. It is at present endeavoring to create a production version of 101EX concept of Rolls-Royce.
