The Honda CR-V was the inaugural vehicle of Honda's Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) range. The car entered the market in 1996 and since then has undergone a number of face lifts. The third generation Honda CR-V is currently in the market.
The name
There is a lot of discrepancy surrounding the “CR-V” part of the name. Many Honda dealers cite different meanings for tis name. The sales literature in United Kingdom cites the full form of CRV as “Compact Recreational Vehicle”.

Introduction
The Honda CR-V was first launched in the year 1996 as Honda's first SUV. The authorities were not very sure of the value of this new car at the beginning. The Honda Passport was a strong contender in the market. It was a niche venture on the part of the company but the popularity of the vehicle came as a surprise.
Chicago Auto Show was the car exhibition where the Honda CR-V was launched for the first time in United Kingdom. The Toyota RAV4 was a similar car in the market that posed a strong competition for this car. The sales soon exceeded those of the RAV4 and CRV established strong roots for the coming years.
First generation CR-V
The first CRV edition lasted for five years since its launch in 1996. The Crossroad was the Japanese car whose market was taken over by this new vehicle. The engine capacity was 126 hp with a 133 feet-lbf of torque. On the outside the size was comparable to the Integra's 1.8 l engine. The internal workings of the engine was so designed that additional torque could be provided.
The interiors were comfortable and convenient. The back seats could be folded and a picnic table could be stored on the floor at the back. Front wheel drive and Honda's real time 4WD were the two drive train choices afforded.
Second edition Honda CR-V
In 2001 this Honda car underwent a complete face lift. The engine was replaced with a K24 engine. These new engine produced 160 hp and 162 ft-lbf of torque. The i-VTEC system combated the fuel consumption. This optimum usage of fuel was art of the engine's design that was retained from the former model. In 2005 Honda CR-V wheels were updated with 16 inch wheels from the previous 15 inch wheels.
The new Honda CRV was declared the Best Small SUV in 2002 and 2003. Airbags were introduced in 2005 in an attempt to increase safety measures. Electronic Brake distribution and vehicle stability assist were also installed as a precautionary step.
Recent edition
The latest version of Honda CR-V has a number of features that were added. A rear lift gate, elimination of the spare wheel on the rear door and outer alterations were visible changes. This was a more compact version of the earlier models in terms of dimension. Internally the engine was replaced with the K-series 2.4 L 4 Cylinder engines.
The interiors underwent a tan and beige color change based on client feed back. The luminescent dials glow and light the car as you start the engine. The new Honda CR-V is an improved version of the earlier models.
