Carloanshub » Cars » Types of Cars » Estate
Estate cars or Estate refers to the large station wagons. In other words, what the Americans and Australians mean by station wagons are known as Estate cars or even Estate in United Kingdom. These cars are big in size and they fall under the passenger car category. Categorically and according to the body size these types of cars are similar to the sedan cars. There is only one difference between the estate cars and the sedan cars. The Estate cars have an extended cargo area and the sedan cars do not have that. Estate cars are often referred to as station sedan by the American automakers.
How does the Estate cars look?

Most of the estate cars have car bodies that look like a modified version of the sedan car. The extended cargo area of the estate car makes the rear window of the car nearly vertical but in the sedan cars the window is slightly slanted. The Estate car can also be distinguished from a multipurpose vehicle like minivan and the sports utility vehicle. The shape of the estate is more like the cars and not like the vans. The estate cars have gained popularity among the tourists who travel from one place to the other by the car.

History of Estate cars

The First Station wagons or Estates were produced during the train travel. At that time they were called depot hack. Later, in the 1930s the automakers began making station wagons or estate cars. The frames were made of hard wood but later steel was introduced in this work. The use of steel gave the station wagons durability and strength and also cut down the cost of production.

The first enclosed automobile was introduced by Essex in the year 1922. This was the first affordable enclosed automobile of that time. Later in the year 1924, the first enclosed station wagon or Estate car was made for the people to opt for. Star, which was a section of Duran Motors made the first Estate car in 1923. In 1929, Ford became the biggest seller of station wagons or Estate cars. General Motors also introduced an Estate car that had steel made body with eight seats in the year 1935.

Major historic Estate cars

The major historic Estate cars or station wagons include Mitchell Bentley, Hercules and Cantrell. The passenger compartments of these station wagons were given to custom body builders.
